Ethiopian expands fleet with Twin Otter delivery

ADDIS ABABA – ETHIOPIAN Airlines, Africa’s largest carrier, has strengthened its domestic and regional aviation capabilities with the delivery of its first de Havilland DHC-6 Twin Otter Classic 300-G aircraft, a move set to enhance access to remote destinations and boost tourism across Ethiopia.

The aircraft is one of two expected from De Havilland Aircraft of Canada and marks a significant step in the airline’s ongoing expansion of its domestic network, particularly to underserved and hard-to-reach regions where air travel remains essential for connectivity.

According to Ethiopian Airlines Group Chief Executive Officer Mesfin Tasew, the new addition will play a critical role in strengthening the airline’s multi-purpose operational capacity.

“The acquisition of the DHC-6 Twin Otter Classic 300-G aircraft will complement the extensive domestic air transport service provided by Ethiopian Airlines,” Tasew said.

“This aircraft is configured for multi-purpose missions, including charter operations to tourist destinations, airport calibration, aerial surveys and air ambulance services. Our commitment to promoting tourism and providing essential air services in Ethiopia remains at the core of our strategic objectives.”

The Twin Otter Classic 300-G is widely regarded for its short take-off and landing (STOL) performance, allowing it to operate in airfields with limited infrastructure.

The aircraft combines rugged reliability with modern avionics, including a Garmin G1000 integrated flight deck, upgraded cockpit ergonomics, improved electrical systems and lightweight cabin seating.

Its flexibility makes it particularly suited to East Africa’s diverse terrain, where aviation plays a vital role in connecting rural communities, supporting tourism circuits and enabling emergency response services.

From a manufacturer’s perspective, the delivery underscores the long-standing partnership between Ethiopian Airlines and Canadian aircraft producer De Havilland.

Ryan DeBrusk, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at De Havilland Canada, said the aircraft’s capabilities align closely with the airline’s operational environment.

“The Twin Otter’s proven reliability, versatility and ability to operate in challenging environments make it well suited to the diverse missions Ethiopian Airlines will undertake across the region,” he said.

“We value the trust placed in De Havilland Canada and look forward to supporting continued growth and connectivity across East Africa.”

The introduction of the 300-G model further modernises Ethiopian Airlines’ already diverse fleet, which includes Boeing 787 Dreamliners, Boeing 777s, Boeing 737s, Airbus A350 variants and De Havilland Q400 aircraft.

The airline has built a reputation as one of Africa’s most reliable aviation brands, operating more than 160 domestic and international destinations across five continents.

Its focus on expanding domestic reach is closely tied to Ethiopia’s growing tourism ambitions, particularly in regions rich in cultural heritage and natural attractions that remain difficult to access by road.

Industry analysts say the deployment of smaller, highly adaptable aircraft such as the Twin Otter is essential for unlocking the full potential of Ethiopia’s tourism sector, while also strengthening emergency response and public service aviation.

The latest acquisition forms part of Ethiopian Airlines’ long-term strategy under its “Vision 2035” roadmap, which aims to position the carrier among the world’s top 20 aviation groups while reinforcing its role as a pan-African connector of people, commerce and opportunity.
