FlySafair urges smooth holiday travel

JOHANNESBURG – LOW-COST carrier FlySafair has urged travellers to prepare carefully when flying with electronic devices this Easter, as airports brace for increased passenger volumes during the holiday period.

With school holidays approaching, the airline emphasised that proper planning when travelling with gadgets such as mobile phones, laptops, tablets, cameras and power banks can significantly ease the airport experience.

“A little preparation goes a long way, especially during peak travel periods,” said Kirby Gordon, Chief Marketing Officer at FlySafair.

“If you keep essentials close, make devices easy to screen and understand battery rules, you will move through the airport faster and more efficiently.”

The airline advised passengers to keep all essential items, including devices, chargers, travel documents and medication, in their carry-on luggage.

Travellers were also encouraged to organise electronics in easily accessible compartments to streamline security screening and avoid delays.

FlySafair further recommended that passengers pre-book checked luggage online to save time and reduce costs, while ensuring all devices and accessories are properly labelled and stored to prevent loss or damage.

Adhering to carry-on size and weight limits remains critical, even when travelling with multiple gadgets.

Particular emphasis was placed on the handling of power banks and spare lithium-ion batteries, which are subject to strict international aviation safety regulations.

These items are prohibited in checked luggage and must always be carried in the cabin.

The airline noted that batteries under 100 watt-hours are generally permitted without approval, while those between 100 and 160 watt-hours require airline authorisation and are limited in quantity.

Batteries exceeding 160 watt-hours are not allowed on passenger aircraft.

The restrictions, FlySafair explained, are in place to ensure passenger safety. In the rare event of overheating or malfunction, incidents involving lithium-ion batteries can be addressed more effectively within the cabin than in the aircraft hold.

“We share these guidelines every peak season because a prepared passenger is a relaxed passenger,” Gordon said. “A smoother airport experience starts with knowing exactly what is in your bag and what to expect.”

FlySafair continues to position itself as a leading player in Southern Africa’s aviation sector, offering affordable domestic and regional routes while maintaining a strong reputation for operational reliability and on-time performance.
