Esigodini: Nature, heritage and culture

by MKHOKHELI NCUBE
UMZINGWANE – ESIGODINI is emerging as a promising tourism destination in Matabeleland South, offering travellers an appealing combination of scenic landscapes, cultural heritage, waterfalls, dams, distinctive rock formations and rural hospitality.

Located in Umzingwane District in the northern part of Matabeleland South, Esigodini lies about 42 kilometres south-east of Bulawayo and along important road connections towards Beitbridge and South Africa.

Its strategic position gives it potential to become an attractive stopover and tourism gateway for domestic, regional and international visitors travelling through the province.

What makes Esigodini particularly exciting is the variety of experiences available within the surrounding Umzingwane landscape.

Visitors can discover waterfalls, reservoirs, caves, historical sites, traditional landscapes and striking granite formations while experiencing the culture and hospitality of the local Ndebele communities.

Among the area’s attractions is Lumene Falls, located about 42 kilometres south-west of Esigodini’s central business district.

The waterfall is surrounded by balancing rocks and vegetation, providing an attractive setting for picnics, camping, photography and nature excursions.

Diana’s Pools, about 38 kilometres from Esigodini, offers another unusual attraction.

Its distinctive pot-shaped pools are associated with rare orbicular granite formations, giving visitors an opportunity to combine sightseeing with geological discovery.

History enthusiasts can explore Kumbudzi Ruins, while Matshatshatsha Falls provides another spectacular waterfall experience.

The wider district also contains caves, traditional sites, rock artefacts and heritage locations that could support cultural and archaeological tourism.

Esigodini’s growth point is the current district service centre, which has been recommended as a town, and the creation of the Esigodini town board is at an advanced stage.

Thus, Esigodini will soon be given town status, making it the district town for Umzingwane.

The district also has five (5) rural service centres, which can be earmarked as growth centres.

Thus, these five can be designated growth points, while some business centres will now be upgraded to rural service centres, feeding into these growth centres.

Water-based tourism provides another opportunity.

Umzingwane Recreational Park, approximately 38 kilometres south-east of Bulawayo, offers fishing, boating, angling, swimming and birdwatching opportunities.

The surrounding reservoirs, including Mtshabezi, Ncema, Inyankuni and Umzingwane dams, provide further possibilities for carefully managed recreational tourism.

For visitors, the scenery changes from open countryside and agricultural landscapes to granite hills, rocky outcrops, waterfalls, reservoirs and greener riverine environments.

The area’s famous Blue Hills and valley landscapes add to its visual appeal.

Food can become another reason to visit.

Travellers can experience traditional Ndebele and Zimbabwean cuisine, including sadza served with beef, chicken, goat or vegetables, roasted maize, traditional leafy vegetables, beans and locally produced meats.

Visitors can also enjoy seasonal fruits and locally prepared refreshments, while rural hospitality can turn an ordinary meal into an authentic cultural experience.

Tourism could also become an important employment creator. Accommodation, restaurants, guiding, transport, handicrafts, cultural performances, farming experiences, conservation, entertainment and outdoor recreation can generate direct and indirect livelihoods.

Umzingwane Rural District Council itself identifies tourism, alongside agriculture and mining, as an area with significant investment potential.

To unlock Esigodini’s tourism potential, the Matabeleland South Government and partners could prioritise road access, signage, reliable water and electricity, telecommunications, visitor information centres, conservation, security and accommodation.

Developing professionally managed camping facilities, cultural villages, guided trails, birdwatching sites, boating facilities and community tourism enterprises could turn attractions into complete visitor experiences.

The district’s investment plans already identify opportunities in cultural tourism, ecotourism, gastronomy, birdwatching, geological education, mountain biking, boating and accommodation.

Most importantly, local communities should be central beneficiaries and custodians of the tourism economy. Training young people as guides, chefs, conservation workers, hospitality professionals and entrepreneurs would ensure tourism income remains within the community.

Esigodini may not yet have the international profile of Victoria Falls, but that is precisely part of its attraction.

It offers travellers an opportunity to discover a less-explored Zimbabwean destination where nature, heritage, culture and community come together.

With strategic investment and effective international marketing, Esigodini can become a compelling tourism gateway for Matabeleland South — inviting Zimbabweans, Africans and visitors from around the world to discover a destination rich in scenery, history and authentic local experiences.
