JOHANNESBURG – A compelling new interdisciplinary dance production, CODE/DNA, presented by Vuyani Dance Theatre in partnership with Arts Alive Festival, is set to open at the Keorapetse William Kgositsile Theatre this month.

The production brings together a dynamic collective of South African artists in a bold exploration of memory, identity and the body as a living archive.

Choreographed and directed by Otto Andile Nhlapo, Assistant Artistic Director of Vuyani Dance Theatre, CODE/DNA is grounded in the concept that the human body retains memories, emotions and inherited knowledge beyond conscious awareness.

Through a seamless blend of contemporary dance, original music, multimedia projection and innovative lighting, the production creates an immersive experience in which the body becomes both storyteller and repository.

The work delves into shared human experiences, examining how trauma, ancestry and lived realities are encoded within individuals.

Through fluid movement and emotionally resonant choreography, it highlights the interplay between body and mind, suggesting that while time progresses, the body continues to remember.

An original score by Sbusiso Shozi shapes the sonic landscape of the production. The Durban-born composer’s work spans theatre, television and opera, with international reach across cities such as Paris, Berlin and New York.

His ongoing collaboration with Nhlapo adds depth to the production’s interdisciplinary approach.

Lighting design is led by Oliver Hauser, whose acclaimed work across global stages enhances the visual and emotional atmosphere of the performance.

His contribution plays a pivotal role in drawing audiences into the world of CODE/DNA.

The production features a diverse ensemble of performers, including Khanyisile Ngwabe and Teboho Cecil Motaung, alongside a live musical ensemble.

Musical direction is supported by Simphiwe Sanele Skhakhane, with contributions from multi-instrumentalist Thokozani Nsibande, bassist Sipho Reuben Dhlamini and saxophonist Ziwe Fihlani.

With its fusion of dance, music and visual storytelling, CODE/DNA offers a thought-provoking and immersive theatrical experience, positioning itself as a significant addition to South Africa’s contemporary performance landscape.
